big sur water BigSurMap3This is a great list of wonderful places within the US of A that mimic the world’s best traveled places.

Mediterranean island, Big Sur, CA – PBS calls this living Eden. Big Sur is a sparsely populated region of the Central Coast of California where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. The name “Big Sur” is derived from the original Spanish-language “el sur grande”, meaning “the big south”, or from “el país grande del sur”, “the big country of the south”, referring to its location south of the Monterey Peninsula. Mimics Greece Islands.

Denali National Park, Alaska. – If trying to climb glorious, ice-capped peaks is your thing, check out Alaska’s Denali National Park. Mount McKinley, the highest peak in North America, is the park’s centerpiece. At less than 10,000 feet shorter than Everest, it might be a good (closer) place to start. Think about the Himalayas.

JOSHUA TREEJoshua Tree National Park – The oddly-shaped Joshua Tree makes this national park in Southern California look like the exotic African steppe, but the tree is actually native to the Western U.S. Think about the African Steppe.

Tropical Paradise, Kauai, HI- No need to try to compare Hawaii’s most gorgeous and least-developed island, Kauai, with anywhere else in the world. You may recognize the lush, mountainous landscape as a backdrop for Jurassic Park. America’s own paradise may require hopping on a plane to get there, but the stunning scenery is well worth the ticket price.KAUAI above-wailua-river-3Key West- Closer Caribbean. Key West, at the southernmost tip of the Florida Keys, is about as close as you can get to the Caribbean without actually hopping on a cruise. With its crystal blue waters, year-round warm temperatures, and outdoor activities ranging from scuba diving to golf, the little isle is wildly popular with tourists.

key-west-1-copyAlpine Field – Mount Rainer, Washington State – To say that the hills are alive at Mount Rainier is actually a little scary. The ice-capped berg west of Seattle may look like a gentle giant, but it is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world

Amazon Jungle – el yunque national forest, Puerto Rico – El Yunque National Forest may not be in the continental U.S., but it’s the only tropical rain forest in the United States National Forest System. Between the forest’s towering mountains, cascading waterfalls and tropical flora and fauna, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into the Amazonian jungle.
